Governing AI Agents in Financial Analytics

Financial services firms are increasingly exploring AI agents to handle recurring business analysis and investigate broken data pipelines. However, data leaders face a significant operational bottleneck: ensuring that an automated agent understands business metrics correctly, has appropriate permissions, and relies on accurate data. According to a November 2026 report from ERP News covering Snowflake's Expedition 2026 event, the platform is expanding AI automation while introducing tighter governance controls to address these exact concerns.

Standardizing Metrics with Business Ontology

For financial teams utilizing multiple analytics tools, inconsistent metric definitions can quickly derail reporting accuracy. If an AI agent pulls a generic calculation for "net revenue" instead of the firm's approved compliance definition, the resulting analysis is unreliable. To address this consistency workflow, Snowflake is introducing Business Ontology, a capability currently scheduled to enter public preview. As part of the Horizon Context within Horizon Catalog, Business Ontology allows organizations to provide agents with approved definitions of core business concepts.

This feature directly connects approved definitions to the underlying tables and views. Crucially for financial governance and auditability, it also assigns ownership and maintains a record of any changes made to those definitions. This infrastructure ensures that when a revenue question is posed to an AI agent, it uses the specific definition approved by the business, complete with a clear audit trail.

Controlling Access and AI Spend

Beyond standardizing metric definitions, financial organizations must govern what systems AI agents can access and how much compute spend they are allowed to incur. Snowflake's Cortex AI Gateway, which is now generally available, provides the infrastructure to govern agent permissions. This enables data teams to restrict automated agents to authorized systems and monitor their activity, establishing a foundation for the secure deployment of always-on bots.

Implementation Prerequisites Checklist

Before deploying AI agents for financial analysis, decision-makers should evaluate their current data architecture against these governance prerequisites:

  • Metric Standardization: Are critical calculations universally defined and documented across all your organization's analytics tools?
  • Data Lineage: Are your business definitions directly connected to the correct underlying data tables and views?
  • Auditability: Is there a clear system of record for who owns each business metric and who approved recent definition changes?
  • Access Control: Do you have a gateway in place to restrict AI agent permissions and monitor automated compute spending?
